Job Description

Summary:  The Chaplain provides religious services, and coordinates services for the Academy’s community. The Chaplain provides Vespers on Sundays, Bible study as coordinated, and attends all major campus events.  The Chaplain will coordinate for various religious faith groups represented in the corps of cadets. 

Essential Functions as Chaplain:

  • Meets with Commandant as needed. 
  • Supports execution of maroon phase high risk behavior prevention training.
  • Provide regular counseling services Monday through Friday and on-call emergencies.
  • Works with the nurses in the Health Center to provide for referral of cadets, faculty, and staff to outside agencies.
  • Provides and coordinates counseling for cadets referred by faculty, Commandant and his staff.  Cadets may seek counseling voluntarily, as well.
  • Maintains regular contact with parents and guardians of cadets that are receiving counseling. 
  • Member of the Suitability Board.
  • Keeps the Commandant informed and advises in the area of religion and morale.
  • Performs and provides religious services for the Corps of Cadets.
  • Oversees and conducts weekly vesper services, and coordinates services for other religious faith groups.
  • Plans yearly Baccalaureate program and recommends speaker.
  • Coordinates weekly Bible study program.
  • Notifies Director of Facilities and/or Commandant of chapel usage and needed maintenance.
  • Coordinates annual Evensong service.
  • Conduct memorial services as the need arises.
  • Provides religious and grief counseling as able.
  • Provides moral and ethical guidance and counseling to cadets, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains status as an ordained or licensed member of the clergy.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Master of Divinity degree or terminal degree preferred, with recognition by an established church body as a licensed member of that church body is a must. 
  • Must have at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Must be an experienced religious professional, licensed and ordained by a recognized religious body.  He/She must maintain credentials of ordination or licensure by meeting the requirements of his/her church body. 
  • Must be able to function independently, and engage in multi-tasking as part of the daily professional regimen. 
  • Knowledge of the Academy’s mission, organization, function, purpose, goals and Admission requirements.
  • Must have the ability to work with a wide range of religions and religious organizations.
  • Knowledge and experience in crisis intervention is a critical component. 
  • Must have knowledge and awareness of the signs and indicators of depression, suicide, drug/alcohol use or addiction over the counter drug/inhalant abuse, and other high-risk behaviors, and the treatment of these.
  • Knowledge of community and state counseling service and community support services.
  • Possess the knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills.
  • Must have the ability to work with students and develop interpersonal relationships, be creative and resourceful, be flexible in all situations, and to work as a team with all departments.
  • Sound judgement and listening skills in resolving problems and conflict management.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing, proposal writing and record-keeping.

Physical demands:  While performing this job, the employee must be able to lift 25 pounds, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and keyboards; reach with hands and arms (both), balance, stoop, and stand for at least two hours at a time. The employee must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs multiple times daily. The specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

Work environment:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather conditions with slipping, tripping and bumping hazards.
